Hassan Bubacar Jallow, new president of the Supreme Court of The Gambia,

Gambian magistrate Hassan Bubacar Jallow, who held high office in United Nations courts, became the new president of the Supreme Court of The Gambia, a country where foreign judges were traditionally appointed to key positions.

Mr. Jallow, who was appointed by the new President of the Gambia Adama Barrow to this position as the country’s first magistrate, served as judge of the Appeals Chamber of the Special Court for Sierra Leone from 2002 to 2003, then Prosecutor of the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR) in Arusha, Tanzania.

Hassan Bubacar Jallow studied law at the University of Dar es Salaam in Tanzania in 1973, at the Nigerian Law School in Nigeria in 1976 and at University College London in the United Kingdom in 1978. Sierra Leone, then Prosecutor of the Tribunal International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR) in Arusha, Tanzania.

• He was appointed Magistrate of the Gambian Public Prosecutor’s Office in 1976 and Deputy Prosecutor General in 1982.

• From 1984 to 1994, he served as Attorney General and Minister of Justice.

• From 1998 to 2002 he served as judge of the Supreme Court of the Gambia.

 

The Supreme Court of the Gambia is a founding member of the CJCA.
